Yoga. Are you missing the point? An Interview with Lj

This weekend Ivor and I are off to teach at a fitness convention in Romania.  I have just finished an interview with a local journalist about the types of Yoga classes we will be teaching and I thought you might find my answers interesting  🙂

I write a lot about meditation and yoga and I should say that VINYASA FLOW YOGA is a class that caught my attention. How important is conscious breathing whilst doing yoga moves?

.
It’s the most important part of practice.  Yoga literally means union, our breath is the bridge that links the mind and body.  Anyone can do a Warrior 1, it’s just a lunge, it’s breath and intention that creates this union or yoga.

.
What are the main benefits of controlling our breathing when doing slow moves in yoga or Pilates?

.
Breath control creates awareness and control within our bodies, it prevents injury and deepens practice.

.
Could you say that VINYASA FLOW YOGA is similar to moving meditation?

.
Funnily enough that’s almost exactly what I say in class, vinyasa flow yoga is literally meditation in movement. When you get the hang of it and can stay in the moment through your breath it feels so amazing.

.
People need sport to cut down everyday stress. How useful is a yoga class to relieve stress?

.
Our nervous system is split into two parts and the use of one or the other dictates our stress levels.  Our sympathetic nervous system increases our heart rate, makes our breath shallow and prepares our bodies for a fight or flight response.  Yoga engages our parasympathetic nervous system, deepening our breathing, slowing our heart rate and reducing stress levels.  I’d also add that classes like my Core Power Yoga are designed for those who want the sweat and strength as well as the holistic benefits of yoga.

.
Nowdays yoga classes are gaining so much attention. As an international presenter and instructor, why do you think yoga is so popular among people of all ages?

.
I think science has brought us round full circle.  Yoga has been around for three millenia.  It has it’s roots in ancient civilisations and it’s only now that we are realising that our western lives need balancing.  Yoga provides this balance and teaches us to come back to ourselves and to the moment, to really engage with life.

.
Besides VINYASA FLOW YOGA you will be presenting another interesting class at the fitness convention in Bucharest: CORE POWER YOGA. What are the main differences between the two?

.
As I mentioned above, Core Power Yoga is a class that my boyfriend and I designed to bridge a gap that many people in the western world find difficult.  We all like to feel like we’ve worked out in the gym, so CPY gives a good work out which opens yoga to almost anyone...

.

I understand that CORE POWER YOGA combines meditation with stretching and strength exercices. So, besides relieving stress it is good training for our muscles. What are the benefits of CORE POWER YOGA if we want to look and feel good?

.
Not many people know that the holistic practices are actually the best for developing core strength, more yoga means more six packs and flat tummies!

.
You are also present a new fitness programme in Bucharest: RELEASE-ME. It’s not about the yoga moves anymore, it’s about dance moves and loud music. Tell me more about this new class.

.
I designed this programme to bring together all the best elements of the different classes that I teach. Combining yoga with dance, tai chi, deep stretch and meditation to create a feeling of release, of letting go.  It’s a fun, interactive class which goes down really well after a long day.

.
Which of these classes would you  recommend for someone who is a beginner?

.
Come along to Release Me!  It’s a taste of everything and the music helps you with anything you’re not familiar with.  Everyone always leaves with a smile on their face.

.
If, for example, I want to have a more toned body should I do a yoga class or should I do some more cardio? What is your opinion?

.
I believe in everything in balance.  Some cardio is always good, but make sure you balance it with some holistic practice – not only is it good for your body, it’s also good for you…
